Accreditation
Since 2001, the UHMS has a clinical hyperbaric medicine facility accreditation program. Clinical hyperbaric facilities can demonstrate their commitment to patient care and facility safety by voluntarily participating in this program. When invited to perform an accreditation survey, the UHMS will send a team of experts to the facility to examine staffing and training, equipment installation, operation, and maintenance, facility and patient safety, and standards of care.
In addition to a seal of approval, indicating that the facility meets the high performance standards required for accreditation, accredited facilities enjoy the following benefits:
- One free UHMS membership for 2 years, includes copy of UHM Journal.
- A plaque suitable for display in a prominent location in the healthcare facility
- Six month report from the UHMS Director of Quality Assurance, Tom Workman, highlighting Society activities related to regulatory issues, reimbursement, fiscal intermediary communication, etc. Note: this communication will be directed to the healthcare facility senior management, not the Medical Director of the hyperbaric facility, to keep the leadership of the organization informed of issues related to the practice of hyperbaric medicine.
- One free copy of bi-monthly newsletter, Pressure (after June 2008) for 2 years
- Listed on the UHMS website as an accredited facility
- Listed in the UHM Journal & Pressure as an accredited facility
- Listed on accredited facilities board at UHMS Annual Meetings
- One UHMS poster for the accredited facility & authorization to use the UHMS logo on stationery and marketing materials
Accreditation fees are as follows, but are subject to change:
- Application Fee: $495
- Survey Fee: $4500
- Consultation Survey Fee: $1500
- See accreditation manual for additional information related to reimbursable expenses, etc.

Significant changes in a facility’s organization can affect its accreditation status. Examples of a significant change can include relocation or remodel of facility, change in services offered, merger or joint venture with another organization, change in service provider (contractor), or change in key facility personnel. Please notify the UHMS within 30 days of the change. Failure to notify the UHMS may result in loss of accreditation. Depending on the nature and significance of the changes, an interim site-survey may be required to maintain accreditation.
