Mission Statement:

The continuing medical education mission of the Pacific Chapter of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) is to develop and promote programs that improve the scientific knowledge of physicians, HBO techs and nurses, and other allied health professionals, from the Pacific Coast Region, including the western United States and Canada, in matter related to undersea and hyperbaric environments and the appropriate applications and treatment of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.  Also the Pacific Chapter will encourage members to present their research work sharing new information and for comment and critique by their colleagues.

Needs Assessment:

As the science of Hyperbaric Medicine continues to advance, we must provide a forum to educate our members at all levels of these advances in the field of Hyperbaric Medicine.  There are over 4 million certified divers in the United States.  There is a continuing need to educate divers and health care professionals about diving safety, diving injuries, and how to avoid these injuries.  The medical applications of Hyperbaric Medicine are expanding also.  Adding wound care treatments to Hyperbaric Medicine treatments is growing as well.  Our meetings must address these new areas of medicinal care and update our members.

Expected Results (Goals and Objectives):

The Scientific Session – The Friday Session centers on the clinical and medical applications of hyperbaric therapy and wound care in the management of such problems as complicated non-healing wounds, sports injuries, saturation diving, missed gas embolism, and diving injuries.  The Friday session will also demonstrate the importance of HBO facility accreditation and show how HBO research can affect the public’s health.  Following the Friday Session, attendees will have a better understanding of wound healing using oxygen as well as growth factors, new thoughts on angiogenesis, surgical management of diabetic wounds, new uses for HBO in sports injuries, and how to improve outcomes in osteomyelitis treatment.

The Diving Medicine Session – The Saturday Session centers on the diving community and their medical issues, including marine animal injuries, ear problems in diving, decompression issues, diving computer risks, and new issues in women divers and younger age divers.  Following the Saturday Session, attendees will have a better understanding of how to treat marine animal injuries, ear trauma in diving and they will have updates on the causes of diving injuries, concerns of diving with  computers rather than tables, and they will be able to better evaluate divers of all ages, both male and female.
