Physician - NASA NBL (Medical Director)

Description

This medical director position will provide support to the National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) Johnson Space Center (JSC) Space Medicine and Clinical Operations Division by providing medical expertise and knowledge for supporting the JSC Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL). This includes supporting crew suited dives, divers, aerospace physiology training, and altitude chamber. Additionally perform pre/post dive physicals, provide ACLS support in the event of a medical emergency, and provide inside medical tender support if the hyperbaric chamber is utilized for medical treatment. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • As Medical Director, oversee all medical operations and provide direct daily medical support at the NBL (40ft. deep, 6.2-million-gallon pool used by NASA to train astronauts for spacewalks). 
  • Provide direct medical supervision for aerospace physiology technicians and paramedics.
  • Conduct daily pre/post-test physical examinations on personnel entering the water to include astronaut crew members and ~ 40 working divers. 
  • Provide on-station medical monitoring during all astronaut training.
  • Provide initial diagnosis and treatment of diving and work-related minor injuries and illnesses. 
  •  Provide emergency treatment and stabilization (ACLS) of facility personnel until transported to hospital.
  • Provide hyperbaric treatment in the 12 patient, dual lock multi-place hyperbaric chamber for decompression illness which may occur during training.
  • Ensure the hyperbaric chamber remains in proper operating condition and the chamber crew is trained and certified.
  • Provide monthly safety day medical lectures to the facility staff. 
  •  Support vacuum chamber human testing by providing pre-flight briefings to chamber subjects and test team members; conducting pre/post-test physical examinations on test subjects, rescue technicians and lock observers; and providing on-station medical monitoring during all suited subject tests.
  • Oversee the physiological training program that utilizes a hypobaric (altitude) chamber to educate personnel on the hazards of altered pressure environments; this includes reviewing medical qualifications of all participants and providing on-station medical monitoring for all chamber operations. 
  •  Provide medical information/knowledge/expertise to International Space Station Program (ISSP), Mission Operations Directorate (MOD) and Human Health and Performance Directorate (HH&P) boards (MIOCB, SA FACB, SCOCCB, FRCB, etc.).
  • Provide weekly reports to Manager.
  • Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel
  • Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures
  • Work primarily at NASA Sonny Carter Test Facility.
  • Providing weekly reports to the KBR group manager.
  • Complete all assigned training (UTMB, KBR and NASA), and maintaining compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies, and procedures. 
  • Required to maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree in medicine (D.O. or M.D.) with a clinical Board certification (e.g. Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, etc.) or Board eligibility required.
  • Must be able to obtain a Texas State Medical License within 6 months of hire date.
  • Board certification in Hyperbaric/Undersea medicine. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with computer systems is important.
  • Operational military experience, developing requirements for cockpit design, or human system integration is highly desired.
