The CHT/Safety Director is responsible to oversee performance of hyperbaric treatments uring all safety policies and procedures are followed;  is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of Safety and Regulatory standards to facilitate a safe environment in the provision of therapeutic management of patient care.and Standards of Practice and policies and procedures and NFPA99. Serves as the key resource for staff as it relates to the safety, maintenance, and system compliance for the hyperbaric program. The CHT/Safety Director is responsible for the quality of patient hyperbaric treatments and competencies and the adherence to standards of care and safety of other relevant  staff.   Assists in the delivery of hyperbaric treatments; maintaining patient and environmental safety at all times.  The CHT/ Hyperbaric Safety Director has responsibility and accountability is as follows:



  • Provides over sight of patients during hyperbaric treatments

  • Provides hyperbaric chamber system orientation and serves as preceptor for all staff and physicians uring competencies.

  • Assists with patient care duties as needed and maintains required competencies.

  • Maintains and orders hyperbaric supplies as appropriate.

  • Participates in professional organizations such as the Associates of the UHMS.

  • In accordance with the requirements set forth in NFPA 99, Chapter 14, the Safety Director will work with the Medical Director to develop a comprehensive safety program for all department personnel. Serves as the hyperbaric facility technical trainer for all staff members. 

  • Maintains and submits maintenance reports as required. Maintains oversight of all HBO logs.

  • Coordination and approval of all upgrades, modifications, and repairs to the hyperbaric system, including the interaction with hospital maintenance and outside contractors as appropriate.

  • Conducts  in-service training related to various technical aspects of the operation of hyperbaric chamber systems and related components.

  • Accountable for patient education (orientation), maintaining professional competencies.

  • Supports unit education through a variety of activities, such as precepting, unit in-services, and may also ist in organizational educational programs. Attends and participates in staff meetings and required in-services.

  • Is accountable for effective communication with care team members and physicians relevant to safety within the hyperbaric suite.

  • Participates in the orientation of new employees. Works in partnership with members of the team. 

  • Follows plan of care uring progression toward quality outcomes. 

  • Assesses the patient’s level of functioning on admission, transfer and discharge.  Differentiates findings from defined limits of normal.

  • Uses professional judgment in day to day problem solving and decision making.  Seeks istance from Clinical Manager and peers as needed.  

  • Assesses patient’s educational needs and develops a plan to meet these needs.

  • Provides care in consideration of length of stay and patient/family needs.

  • Reviews discharge care with patient/family/physician and other team members.

  • Administers medications and treatments according to patient needs, physician orders and policies, consistent with the scope of care for qualifying credential.

  • Utilizes patient teaching to provide new information to patient/family.  Utilizes patient teaching according to policy.

  • Makes rounds regularly on igned patients.

  • Assists in the day-to-day operation of the hyperbaric facility.

  • Performs patient care within the scope of practice.

  • Keeps complete and accurate patient records as they pertain to essment, treatments and documentation of care.

  • Participates in quality urance programs as requested by the Program Director.

  • Participates in the safety program, organizational committees and task forces as requested.

  • Delegates tasks appropriately to team members.

  • Evaluates patient’s response to treatment utilizing knowledge of disease process and patient’s story.

  • Maintains clinical expertise in area of specialty.

  • Possesses strong verbal communication skills; demonstrating ability to communicate with adult and geriatric age groups.

  • Proficient in all established hyperbaric guidelines and equipment.

  • Possesses leadership and team building skills.

  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.


Education and Experience:



  • High School Diploma/GED.

  • Completion of appropriate UHMS certified hyperbaric technician course and eligible for safety director training.

  • Minimum 1 year of work experience as hyperbaric technician/military training/EMT


Certification:



  • Certified Safety Director or successful completion of UHMS or NBDHMT approved hyperbaric safety course and eligible to obtain certification within 3 months.

  • Must have documentation of successful completing of a 40-hour National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT) – approved Introductory Hyperbaric Medicine Course.

  • Certification as a Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT), Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse (CHRN) or Advanced Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse (ACHRN).

  • Maintenance of CHT, CHRN or ACHRN qualifying credential

  • BLS issued from American Heart Association
