Board Certification Exam for Physicians

Physicians can obtain board certification in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine through the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM), with a current certification from one of the 24 primary member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Physicians must submit an application to the board through which they are certified. Physicians certified by an ABMS member board other than ABEM and ABPM and who fulfill the eligibility criteria must apply to ABPM. Upon successful completion of the examination, certification is awarded by the board through which the physician submitted the application.

Physicians interested in pursuing board certification in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine should contact ABEM and ABPM directly for exam dates, application deadlines and fees, and eligibility requirements.

Exams are also given for Osteopathic Medicine Physicians by the American Osteopathic College of Occupational and Preventive Medicine (AOCUHM) .

ABEM requires that a diplomate's primary certification in Emergency Medicine be maintained in order for the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine certification to remain valid.  Also, ABEM tracks the status of each diplomate in meeting its Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements.  Everydiplomate is considered as meeting the ABEM MOC requirements until they reach their five-year requirement deadline and it is determined that they have failed to meet one or more ABEM MOC requirements.

In August 2012, ABEM began reporting each diplomate's MOC status to the ABMS, which will list each diplomate as "meeting MOC requirements" - "yes" or "no" on the ABMS Certification MattersTM website.  Primary source verification for ABEM-issued certificates can be obtained by contacting ABEM (www.abem.org or at 517-332-4800 ext. 381) or via the ABMS Certification MattersTM website.
